Thomas Röwekamp, the chairman of the Defence Committee in the German Bundestag (CDU), stated that any potential German involvement in securing the Strait of Hormuz must be explicitly defined as a defensive mission. According to Röwekamp, a clear mandate under international law and a purely defensive assignment are non-negotiable prerequisites. He further noted that while Germany must maintain these conditions, the country should be prepared to share the responsibility for peace-keeping with its European and transatlantic partners, provided that a stable post-war order emerges from the agreements between the United States and Iran. Röwekamp stressed that anyone who speaks of Europe’s strategic capacity must also be prepared to contribute to the security of vital maritime routes. He emphasized that such participation would immediately serve Germany’s national economic and security interests.
