Kiesewetter Slams Zelenskyy’s Anti-Corruption Law

A prominent German parliamentarian has expressed concern over a recent law signed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which restricts the autonomy of two anti-corruption agencies. Roderich Kiesewetter, a foreign policy expert for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, voiced his reservations in an interview with RTL and ntv television channels.

Kiesewetter stated that the move could hinder Ukraine’s progress toward European Union membership and provides ammunition to critics. He emphasized his belief in the effectiveness of these agencies, having previously visited and observed their operations.

He underscored the significance of the protests currently occurring within Ukraine, where thousands of young people are demonstrating against the legislation. Kiesewetter views these demonstrations as a positive indicator, highlighting the public’s understanding of the stakes involved – both in securing EU accession and maintaining crucial international support necessary for Ukraine’s continued success.

The CDU parliamentarian revealed he has contacted several members of parliament, urging them to exert influence on the Ukrainian government. He further suggested that Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU, should personally engage with President Zelenskyy in an effort to reverse the new policies.
