Klingbeil Demands ‘New China Strategy’: Balancing Cooperation with Countering Unfair Trade Practices

Federal Minister of Finance Lars Klingbeil (SPD) stated recently that the government has been far too naive in its approach to China. Speaking at the Tag der Industrie in Berlin on Monday, he thanked the Federation of German Industries (BDI) for advocating for a clear policy position.

Addressing the complexities of international relations, Klingbeil stressed the need for a fundamental shift in how Germany engages with the People’s Republic. While acknowledging that close cooperation with China is still necessary, he cautioned that this should not stop Germany from adopting a confident posture in its dealings with the country. He emphasized that given the continual expansion of “unfair trade practices” in China, a new strategy is urgently required, coupled with clearer measures against the nation.

In a separate segment, the SPD leader voiced sharp criticism regarding the US government’s decision to deny foreign entities access to Anthropic’s premier AI models. Klingbeil argued that this decision has yet to be adequately debated. Consequently, he called for concrete consequences to be implemented that would support the development of Europe’s digital infrastructure and advance its AI research capabilities.
