Klingbeil Pushes for Two‑Speed Europe in Wake of Geopolitical Turbulence

Bundesfinanzminister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) called for swift changes in the European Union after recent geopolitical turbulence. Speaking at a “Welt” event in Berlin on Tuesday, he stated that it is now time for “a Europe of two speeds” urging the bloc to rely on its own strengths. “Germany, together with France and other partners, will move forward to make Europe stronger and more independent” he said.

To prepare for the EU special summit scheduled for 12 February, Klingbeil held a video conference with his counterparts from France, Italy, Spain, Poland and the Netherlands on Wednesday. He outlined a plan to enhance the EU’s competitiveness and defence capability. Highlighting that the six largest economies can drive progress, he presented a four‑point strategy to the E6 group: accelerating the capital markets union, strengthening the euro, better coordinating defence investments, and securing raw materials.
