Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko has urged German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to supply Taurus missiles to Ukraine, referencing Merz’s previous statements linking Russian attacks on civilian targets to the potential delivery of such weaponry. In a contribution for “Bild am Sonntag” the former boxing champion emphasized the hope that the current German government will uphold prior commitments.
Klitschko described the situation in Ukraine as “extremely difficult” underlining the fierce defense being mounted by Ukrainian soldiers along the front lines. He stressed the urgent need for additional weaponry, particularly air defense systems to protect Ukrainian cities. While acknowledging and appreciating Germany’s past support, he asserted that the escalation of the conflict by Russia necessitates a significant increase in European assistance.
Klitschko voiced concern regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s strategic objective to subjugate Ukraine regardless of the cost, warning of the potential for conflict to expand beyond Ukraine’s borders. He cautioned that failure to contain Putin’s actions within Ukraine could embolden further aggression against other nations.
According to Klitschko’s assessment, approximately 2,000 buildings have been destroyed within Kyiv alone. He affirmed that Putin’s efforts to undermine the resolve of the Ukrainian people will ultimately fail.
