In the opening matchday of the UEFA Nations League, the Netherlands and Germany drew 1-1 in a friendly debut match for national team coach Jürgen Klopp.
Germany took the lead in the 32nd minute. Following a low cross from defender Philipp Treu, Karim Adeyemi attempted a backheel volley, but Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk intercepted. Nmecha was perfectly positioned in the penalty area, allowing him to calmly slot the ball into the lower left corner from close range. The Dutch team had previously requested an interruption of play because Brian Brobbey sustained an injury without opposition contact.
The equalizer came in the second minute of stoppage time in the second half. Cody Gakpo scored for the Netherlands after German forward Serge Gnabry lost possession on the right side to Ruben van Bommel. Van Bommel advanced the ball, crossed it wide with his outside foot, and Gakpo converted the cross with a superb volley into the upper right corner.
