Kramp‑Karrenbauer Rejects Public Praise for a Possible First Female German President, Urges Pride in the Office.

The chairwoman of the CDU‑aligned Konrad‑Adenauer‑Stiftung, Annegret Kramp‑Karrenbauer, is “deeply upset” about the recent public debate surrounding a possible first female German president.

“I have to say honestly that this debate, which we have been having over the past few weeks, irks me deeply” she told the television broadcaster “Welt”. “We are dealing with the country’s highest office, and it’s being treated like a ‘Carpet Bazaar.’ That’s why this is not a debate that should be staged publicly-or, let alone, why people shouldn’t be holding campaign speeches in this context”. She added that “the office deserves dignity and that dignity must be preserved”.

Kramp‑Karrenbauer herself is now being counted as a potential candidate in the expanded field for the upcoming presidential election next year.
