Baden‑Württemberg’s outgoing minister‑premier, Winfried Kretschmann, warned his party against a partnership with the Left (Die Linke). Speaking to the “Tagesspiegel” while in Berlin, he made clear that he is strictly against any cooperation with the Left, citing concerns that the party’s ideology is too extreme. He added that, although a limited, issue‑specific collaboration might be possible, it should not be a foundation for a broader alliance.
Kretschmann argued that the danger of the Left lies in the promises it creates; over time that danger is no less threatening than a direct attack on democracy. He urged the Greens to continue appealing to the broad cross‑section of voters and warned that trying to win over the Left’s base with “left‑wing slogans” would not succeed.
The politician, who will not stand again for the Greens in the state election on March 8, criticised some of his party’s colleagues for focusing too much on lofty goals without a realistic plan. He insisted that politics must be approached from the ground up and that the real measure of success in politics is how well parties can achieve concrete results.
