LDP Forecasts Majority in Japan’s Lower House, Paving the Way for First Female PM Sanae Takaichi

In Japan’s parliamentary election, the ruling LDP party has, according to early polls, secured a majority in the House of Representatives. According to surveys conducted by the public‑broadcasting company NHK, the party led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will hold a sole majority in the lower house. The news agency Kyodo echoes this result, basing its figures on post‑election polling conducted at polling stations. Whether the combined strength of the LDP and its coalition partner – the Japan Innovation Party (JIP) – will reach a two‑thirds majority, however, remains unclear.

The last 2024 election saw the LDP‑Komeito coalition lose its long‑held majority in the House of Representatives, and following a defeat in the upper house, former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba resigned in September 2025. Takaichi succeeded him, becoming Japan’s first female prime minister. Her approval ratings are markedly higher than those of Ishiba, and by calling for early elections she hoped to secure clear majority control in Parliament.
