The left‑wing faction of the German Bundestag says it is willing to discuss a potential amendment to the Basic Law as part of the proposed social‑state reform.
Fraktionschefin Heidi Reichinnek told the online newspaper T‑Online on Tuesday, “We will look closely at the concrete proposals and, as always, decide on the matter. If the government presents something that significantly improves people’s lives, we are ready for a conversation”.
Reichinnek added that the party feels it currently lacks confidence in the government’s campaign to undermine the social safety net. “The fear is that, under the banner of efficiency, this reform could still bring further cuts that hurt ordinary citizens”.
She stressed that the social state must not abandon too many people. “Those who simply want to manage poverty differently can call it efficient, but they offer nothing that improves people’s circumstances”.
