Left Party Surges Green Rivalry Intensifies

A recent poll indicates a significant shift in German voter sentiment, with the Left Party (Die Linke) experiencing a marked increase in popularity. According to a new opinion trend conducted by the Institute for Opinion Research (Insa) and reported by “Bild”, the Left Party now holds as much support as the Green Party.

Were a federal election to occur this coming Sunday, the Left Party would garner 11% of the vote, a gain of 1.5 percentage points from the previous week. Conversely, the Green Party has seen a slight decline, losing 0.5 percentage points to also stand at 11%.

The poll, commissioned by “Bild” and conducted between July 2nd and 2nd, surveyed a representative sample of 2,007 German citizens.

The CDU/CSU maintains its position with 28% support, while the AfD remains steady at 23.5%. The SPD, however, has lost a full percentage point, now standing at 14.5%.

Hermann Binkert, head of Insa, noted that the current projections suggest a coalition of CDU/CSU and SPD is currently trailing behind its performance in the previous federal election. He further highlighted that both the Left Party and the Green Party possess considerable untapped potential, potentially exceeding 20% support and presenting a challenge to the SPD’s position as the third-largest party. The SPD, according to Binkert, has yet to fully realize its potential for growth, which currently stands at 24 percentage points.
