Left Party to Focus on Industrial Policy Amid Recession

Germany’s Left Party intends to strengthen its industrial policy proposals in response to the ongoing economic recession, establishing a dedicated working group to pursue this aim.

The proposal will be formally presented at the party’s parliamentary group meeting in Erfurt this Saturday, according to sources within the party leadership cited by the “Rheinische Post” newspaper.

Party co-leader Ines Schwerdtner, slated to be a member of the group, emphasized the significant challenges of adapting German industry to current circumstances, stating that past mistakes must not be repeated. She added that offering citizens hope, security and viable perspectives is crucial to countering recent right-wing political gains.

The working group will be co-led by Mirze Edis, a member of the German Bundestag representing Duisburg and Stefan Hartmann, a member of the Saxony state parliament. Janine Wissler and Markus Pohle are also confirmed members. Edis stated the group will focus on exploring options including nationalization and communalization, with the aim of developing feasible models. He highlighted the necessity of securing strategic sectors like the steel and automotive industries within Germany.
