Police confirmed on Monday evening that the suspect, who allegedly drove a car through a pedestrian zone in downtown Leipzig, is a 33-year-old German national. The man was stopped by emergency services, and his arrest was ordered by the public prosecutor’s office. He is currently in police custody. According to police estimates, a total of two people have died in the incident, and an undetermined number of people were injured. Rescue workers reported two seriously injured victims, in addition to the two deceased, bringing the total number of affected individuals to twenty. A police cordon has been established around the affected inner-city area, restricting all access to the Grimmaische Straße between the Augustplatz and the Thomaskirchhof.
