Commenting on the ongoing debate surrounding the care reform, Sören Pellmann, the faction leader for The Left, labeled Health Minister Carsten Linnemann’s proposals “completely absurd.” Pellmann renewed the demand for the introduction of a “solidary comprehensive care insurance.” While he conceded that a financial equalization measure between private and social care insurance, or a cap on care costs, would be better than nothing, he insisted that a complete overhaul of the system is truly necessary, speaking to the “Rheinische Post” on Monday.
The Left party is advocating for the abolition of the current two-tier system and instead pushing for a comprehensive, solidarity-based care insurance that every citizen must contribute to-including those currently covered by private insurance. Pellmann stated that this model would be financially feasible if the contributions included not only wages and salaries but also capital gains and rental income. Furthermore, under this proposed system, any personal contributions would not be capped but would vanish entirely.
Regarding Linnemann’s reform plans, the Left politician asserted that it was “completely absurd” for Linnemann to continue cutting services in the care sector, as if nothing had happened. While Pellmann recognized that any intervention by the SPD in the matter would represent a good sign, he expressed skepticism about achieving any meaningful agreement within the current coalition. He criticized politics for adding burdens rather than easing people’s lives, claiming that the Merz government had wholly failed in this responsibility. He concluded that the government deserved the negative response in the last elections because of its austerity policies.
