Heidi Reichinnek, the head of the Left Party faction, strongly criticized former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder’s (SPD) attendance at Russian President Vladimir Putin’s birthday party, labeling the visit as “spineless.” Speaking to the “Tagesspiegel” (Saturday edition), Reichinnek stated, “Putin is a war criminal, and Schröder celebrating him again once more demonstrates his political and moral lack of backbone.” She added that as a former Chancellor, Schröder holds a particular responsibility. The faction leader further described the ongoing situation as deeply disturbing, stating that it is concerning that Schröder continues to fawn over Putin “despite the internationally illegal war against Ukraine.” However, Reichinnek asserted that this conduct also has significant roots in Schröder’s personal financial interests, which, she claimed, he pursued successfully in Russia and continues to do so even now.
