Following the coalition committee meeting, Heidi Reichinnek, the leader of the Left Party parliamentary group, urgently demanded comprehensive financial relief from the government.Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” (Thursday edition), Reichinnek insisted that noticeable relief is required immediately, rather than being postponed until months later. She criticized the government’s focus on what she called an insufficient gas station discount, stating that this measure is “far too low and not even being fully passed on to consumers”.
Reichinnek also dismissed the planned “relief bonus” calling it a hollow measure. According to her, the proposed tax-free €1,000 premium was evidence of governmental incompetence and disorganization. She pointed out that the idea was never fully agreed upon by all involved parties and was ultimately halted by the ruling coalition itself in the Bundesrat.
Moving beyond criticizing existing plans, the Left Party chair urged the Black-Red coalition to introduce a windfall profit tax. Reichinnek explained that the revenue generated from such a tax could be used to finance the reintroduction of the 9-euro ticket and general funds for the energy crisis. Furthermore, she demanded that the government establish a profit margin cap to prevent corporations from inflating prices excessively. Instead, she argued that companies should only be permitted to pass on real cost increases that they themselves incurred during their purchases.
