Linnemann’s Bold Proposal

A leading figure within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Carsten Linnemann, is advocating for a complete cessation of benefits for individuals deemed unwilling to work under the German welfare system, Bürgergeld. In an interview with “Welt” Linnemann emphasized the need for a period of clear and decisive action, suggesting a significant shift in approach to social welfare.

Linnemann argued that the current system is unsustainable, stating that individuals capable of working and without significant barriers to employment should be obligated to do so. He pointed to the millions of Germans who consistently contribute through work and taxes and expressed their expectation that policymakers manage public funds responsibly. According to Linnemann, it is unfair to expect working citizens to financially support those who are able to work but choose not to.

Beyond the Bürgergeld program, Linnemann called for increased efficiency within the Federal Employment Agency, criticizing a perceived imbalance between administrative staff and personnel focused on job placement. He aims for a restructuring that prioritizes connecting individuals with employment opportunities.

The politician further signaled a broader review of the German social welfare system, promising an upcoming commission will scrutinize existing programs and propose reforms by the end of the year. Implementation of these changes will follow in the subsequent year, beginning with immediate adjustments to the Bürgergeld program.

Specific areas targeted for reform include instances of rental fraud involving dilapidated properties, instances of unreported income received alongside welfare benefits and the manipulation of working hours to maximize supplemental income. Linnemann also proposed halting the overseas transfer of child benefits, citing the disproportionate value of these payments in countries like Romania. He believes that Labour Minister Bärbel Bas also shares these views and expressed his support for her work in the role.
