Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota, playing for Liverpool FC, died in a car accident in northwest Spain on Thursday, according to local fire and police authorities.
The incident occurred in the early morning hours when the vehicle reportedly veered off the road for unknown reasons and caught fire. Emergency medical services could only confirm the deaths of the two occupants, Jota and his brother, who were in the car. The 28-year-old forward had married just ten days prior.
The accident took place at kilometer 65 of the A-52 highway heading towards Benavente. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which had spread to nearby vegetation and coordinated with rescue services and the Guardia Civil. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
