Macron Urges Stronger Europe at Munich Security Conference, Critiques Defeatist Views on Ukraine War

Earlier, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) had already called for a stronger Europe at the Munich Security Conference; French President Emmanuel Macron joined the call.

“An even stronger Europe would make us a better ally for our partners” Macron told the audience Friday evening. He believes Europe is naturally strong and can grow even more powerful. “The stronger we become, the better we can serve our partners-especially the United States”. Yet he stressed that Europa needs a far more positive outlook at its core.

Macron also addressed the situation in Ukraine and dismissed defeatist remarks. He argued that Russia, through the war, has weakened itself. “Moscow is now completely dependent on China and faces a military failure” he said. He added that a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia cannot be achieved without Europe’s involvement. “We will be part of the solution, and we should be part of it” he concluded.
