The attacker in Magdeburg has been sentenced to life imprisonment. According to the court ruling announced on Friday by the Magdeburg Regional Court, the court also recognized the exceptional gravity of the crime, although it only postponed the subsequent placement in protective custody. The court largely followed the application made by the State Prosecutor’s Office.
The attack on the Magdeburger Christmas Market involved Taleb A., a 51-year-old Saudi national and physician. On the evening of December 20, 2024, he drove a car through a rescue lane onto the market, speeding through the crowd. The attack resulted in the deaths of six people and injured at least 323 others. He was immediately arrested by the police following the incident.
The trial, which lasted about 40 days, necessitated the construction of a temporary courthouse by the State of Saxony-Anhalt, incurring costs in the millions. During the proceedings, over 100 witnesses and eight expert witnesses were heard. Furthermore, more than 200 victims appeared in court alongside 40 lawyers acting as private prosecutors.
