The perpetrator of the Magdeburg Christmas market attack has contacted media outlets with a handwritten letter, confirmed by the Naumburg General Public Prosecutor’s Office. The ten-page communication, received by “Der Spiegel” in early August and also sent to other news organizations, follows previous attempts by the suspect to contact victims and investigators directly.
The letter, written in both German and English, contains disjointed and seemingly unfounded claims relating to a network of former Muslims, German politics and investigations into his own conduct. It also includes five pages of Arabic-language poetry, described as melancholic and self-authored.
The perpetrator indicated that all materials were intended for publication. Similar accusations were previously shared by the suspect on the platform X (formerly Twitter).
In December 2024, the suspect drove a vehicle into the Magdeburg Christmas market, killing six people and injuring approximately 300 others, some severely. He had been on the radar of German authorities since 2013 due to threats and erratic correspondence, presenting himself as an activist focused on assisting women escape from his country of origin.
Currently in pre-trial detention in Berlin, all incoming and outgoing correspondence from the suspect is being monitored by investigators. According to reports, an indictment against him is expected to be filed in August.
