Magdeburg Dominates St. Pauli in Overtime to Claim Crucial 2. Bundesliga Victory

The 1. FC Magdeburg secured a 4-1 victory against FC St. Pauli on the final matchday of the 2. Bundesliga’s eleventh round.

In the first half, St. Pauli initially seemed to have a slight advantage, but failed to convert those chances into goals. The home side took control following a breakthrough by Mateusz Zukowski in the 22nd minute, generating several subsequent opportunities.

The narrative shifted significantly in the second half when Anselmo Garcia MacNulty doubled Magdeburg’s lead to 2-0 in the 48th minute, following a cross from Chavez. St. Pauli managed to pull one back to 2-1 in the 58th minute through a header by Eric Smith, reacting to a corner taken by Branimir Hrgota.

However, the guests were forced to play shorthanded starting from the 82nd minute after Louis Oppie received a straight red card for a serious foul. Taking advantage of the numerical advantage, Magdeburg did not allow the game to reach a stalemate, restoring a comfortable gap in the 89th minute via a goal from Herbert Bockhorn. Roko Simic capped off the game in stoppage time.

This win moves the Sachsen-Anhalter team up to fourth place in the rankings, while the Hamburger side remains in ninth place. Magdeburg’s next fixture is away in Bielefeld on November 20th after the international break, and St. Pauli will face Bochum the following day. Other results from Sunday afternoon included a 2-2 draw between 1. FC Heidenheim and Hannover 96, and a 3-2 victory for VfL Bochum over Karlsruher SC.
