Mainz 05 secured a favorable position for the second leg of the Conference League quarterfinals by defeating Racing Strasbourg 2-0 in the first match.
The home team dominated the action from the outset and were quickly rewarded for their strong performance. Kaishu Sano scored the opening goal from distance in the 11th minute. Mainz struck again shortly after, with Stefan Posch netting the 2-0 lead in the 19th minute following a corner kick.
Mainz dictated the pace for the remainder of the first half, creating further chances, although they were unable to extend their lead. Strasbourg struggled offensively, only managing sporadic attempts to relieve pressure.
During the second half, the visitors attempted to take control and generated some opportunities, but their finishing was inconsistent, or their efforts were thwarted by the Mainz goalkeeper. The biggest chance arose after nearly an hour, but it proved fruitless.
Conversely, Mainz missed multiple opportunities to seal the victory, including chances from Philip Tietz and Armindo Sieb. Ultimately, the Rhineland team earned a deserved 2-0 win, allowing them to proceed to the second leg in France with confidence.
