Hopes for a swift return of Maja T., currently detained in Hungary, have been tempered by the German government’s Human Rights Commissioner, Lars Castellucci.
Speaking to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” Castellucci indicated that a repatriation to Germany would be the most desirable outcome. However, he clarified that such a transfer would be contingent upon a final Hungarian court ruling and the subsequent possibility of serving any potential prison sentence in Germany.
Castellucci expressed concern regarding Maja T.’s current situation, noting that improvements to the detention conditions could be made. He further raised questions about whether the personal and human rights of a non-binary individual are being adequately considered within the Hungarian judicial and penal system.
The case surrounding Maja T. has been complicated by the circumstances of their extradition from Germany to Hungary approximately a year ago. This transfer occurred shortly before a constitutional court ruling declared similar extraditions unlawful, adding a layer of scrutiny to the process. The individual faces charges of aggravated assault in Hungary.
