Man Charged with Attempted Murder

The German Federal Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges against a Syrian man for attempted murder at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin. The announcement, made Tuesday in Karlsruhe, details a complex set of accusations beyond the initial attack.

The indictment alleges the suspect acted on motivations deemed “low-level” and with “treachery”. He is also charged with aggravated assault and attempted membership in a foreign terrorist organization.

According to the prosecution’s findings, the man traveled from Leipzig to Berlin on February 21, 2025, with the alleged intention of carrying out a knife attack targeting individuals he perceived as non-believers. He then attacked and severely wounded a person at the Holocaust Memorial in central Berlin. Prior to the attack, he reportedly sent a photograph of himself to members of the Islamic State, seemingly to facilitate the group’s potential claim of responsibility.

The suspect was apprehended on the same day and has been held in pre-trial detention since then. The ongoing investigation aims to fully establish the details surrounding the alleged events and the suspect’s motivations.
