The Chairwoman of the Defense Committee in the European Parliament, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP), stated that the proposed requirement for soldiers to serve in the Lithuania Brigade is appropriate. She told “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (Wednesday edition) that the Defence Minister had initially relied on volunteers when establishing the brigade in Lithuania, asserting that this approach was valid. However, she added that if not enough voluntary soldiers sign up for this crucial mission, then the Minister would have to issue an official requirement. The FDP politician stressed, “Being a soldier is not a matter of ‘what you wish for.’ Being a soldier means serving in the interests of the Federal Republic’s security within the alliance.” Defence Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) had announced on Tuesday that the mandatory service for soldiers in the mid-three-digit range would be implemented.
