Manfred Weber, Chairman of the European People’s Party, has called for a renewed focus on strengthening the European single market. Speaking in Berlin on Wednesday, Weber argued that unlocking the full potential of the internal market is crucial for future economic growth.
He highlighted the significant prosperity generated by the single market in the 1980s, while noting that progress has been limited in key areas such as financial services and energy. Weber characterized these sectors as currently consisting of “nationally isolated markets” rather than a unified European framework. He believes that addressing these limitations would foster substantial internal growth opportunities.
Weber emphasized the need for increased investment in innovation as a pathway to ensure Europe’s continued economic success and maintain its position as a leading global economic area. He stated that prioritizing innovation is fundamental to securing Europe’s future prosperity.
