Mass Deportations to Syria and Afghanistan Hindered by Legal and Humanitarian Obstacles

A migration researcher in Dresden, Hans Vorländer, has expressed criticism of the deportation plans announced by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt of the CSU. Vorländer said in the “Rheinische Post” on Tuesday that the government’s announcements of mass deportations to Syria and Afghanistan set up truly false expectations. He added that making voluntary departures easier is by far a simpler approach.

He highlights a number of obstacles to the proposed deportations. Reports from both Syria and Afghanistan continue to indicate ongoing persecution of certain groups-religious and ethnic minorities, and in Afghanistan women in particular. Whether there is any “safe zone” where security can be guaranteed remains unclear.

In addition, individual reasons that could prevent a deportation are being weighed by courts in Germany. For those classified as criminals, a further question arises: will they have to serve their sentences in their home countries or will they be released outright?
