Math Skills Slump: One in Four Students Fail Minimum Standards in Growing Learning Crisis

Fewer students in Germany are meeting the minimum standards in mathematics. According to a report in “Bild” citing a new study from the Leibniz Institute for Educational Research and Information for the Federal Ministry of Education, the percentage of students who do not meet these minimal requirements has risen to 24 percent, up from 16 percent in 2012.

Furthermore, average computer and information skills are declining. These competency drops affect all performance levels, including those in high schools (Gymnasien). The newspaper also reports that the proportion of students leaving school without a formal qualification-when compared to the same-age population-has increased. In a 2024 study, this figure was 6.9 percent, rising from 6.2 percent two years prior, and currently stands at 8 percent.
