Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern CDU Declares AfD Partnership Impossible Amid Calls for Policy Shift

The CDU’s lead candidate for Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, Daniel Peters, refuses any cooperation with the AfD in strict terms. “I exclude that” he told the news magazine Politico when asked whether he would consider coalition or tolerance models after the state election.

Peters said the AfD is not a reliable partner, describing it as a “chaos group” dominated by radical forces. He said the party behaves “content-wise completely arbitrarily and populist” and therefore “cannot be a partner for the CDU”.

At the same time, Peters denied that a government coalition or tolerance with the SPD/Left parties is off the table. He said the decisive factor would be a policy shift in the state – not a matter of personalities. “It has nothing to do with people. It depends on whether an SPD is willing to bring about a policy change” he added. The CDU plans to assess the current majority situation. According to a recent poll, the AfD holds 35 % in Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, the SPD 25 %, the CDU 13 % and the Left 12 %.

Peters urged caution, remarking that poll results are snapshots. “The campaign still lasts months; the key is content and the question of a policy change” he said.

In substance, Peters calls for a turnaround particularly in economic, educational and health policy. He says the current state government only looks “at Berlin” celebrates successes that do not exist and clings to excessive bureaucracy. “We have a leftist government, so it also implements leftist politics” he concluded.
