In a recent cabinet announcement, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) confirmed the reappointment of members to the Council for Sustainable Development. The 15‑member council is tasked with supporting the federal government in advancing Germany’s Sustainability Strategy. Its goal is to convert the current strategy into a “citizen‑oriented action plan” that emphasizes practical, action‑oriented measures.
The council advises the government on all aspects of sustainable development, drawing on expertise that reflects economic, ecological, and social dimensions. Beyond advisory duties, it raises the profile of sustainability in society and the public sphere. “With this, the council makes a very important contribution to the future of our country” the Chancellor said.
The council will now comprise six women and nine men. New appointees include Stefan Bayer of the German Institute for Defence and Strategic Studies and Bettina Bernadotte af Wisborg, former managing director of Mainau GmbH. Each member is appointed for a three‑year term by the Chancellor. The inaugural meeting of the newly constituted council will take place shortly.
