Merkel, Costa Discuss EU Defense, Competitiveness & Financial Future

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) hosted European Council President António Costa in Berlin on Wednesday for discussions focused on bolstering Europe’s defense capabilities and competitiveness.

Speaking at a joint press conference, Merz emphasized the importance of seriously considering two recent reports – one on deepening the European single market authored by former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta and another on strengthening European competitiveness overseen by former ECB President and also former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi. He suggested these reports should form the foundation for collaborative efforts to enhance the European Union’s overall competitiveness.

The discussions also touched on the EU’s multiannual financial framework, with Merz noting the EU Commission has presented a comprehensive proposal that will be a key focus for the next 18 to 12 months. He framed the Berlin meeting as preparatory for informal talks scheduled for October 1st in Copenhagen and a regular meeting at the end of October in Brussels.

Addressing the situation in the Middle East, Merz expressed alignment with Costa, recognizing Qatar’s significant role in mediating a ceasefire in Gaza. He stated a desire to expedite a resolution and confirmed ongoing engagement with various regional stakeholders.

Furthermore, Merz strongly condemned the recent violation of Polish airspace by Russia. He asserted that Russia had put human lives in Poland at serious risk, characterizing the action as part of “a long chain of provocations” observed in the Baltic Sea region and along NATO’s eastern flank. The German government, he stated, unequivocally condemns Russia’s aggressive behavior and lauded Poland, along with several NATO allies, for effectively identifying and mitigating the threat.
