Merkel Successor Threatens EU’s Gas Car Ban

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has strongly condemned recent statements from Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) suggesting a potential reversal of the European Union’s planned ban on internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035.

Sebastian Roloff, the SPD’s parliamentary group’s spokesperson for economic policy, voiced concerns that questioning this phased-out approach risks jeopardizing Germany’s long-term competitiveness and creating economic uncertainty. He emphasized that the 2035 deadline is integral to aligning with both national and European climate objectives.

Roloff further stated that the automotive industry requires consistent support and confidence for a transition toward climate-neutral solutions, rather than being held back by outdated technologies. He underscored the growing consensus that electric vehicles are the future across almost all applications.

The SPD is advocating for a continued focus on facilitating that transition, including targeted purchase incentives, tax advantages and significant investment in expanding the charging infrastructure to support the growth of electric mobility. The party believes that maintaining a clear timeline and committed policy is crucial for providing the automotive sector with the stability needed to navigate this significant shift.
