German Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the CDU is considering attending the Women’s European Championship final in Basel this Sunday, should Germany qualify.
Speaking in Berlin on Monday, government spokesman Stefan Kornelius confirmed the potential visit in response to inquiries from the dts news agency. He explained that Merz had previously been unable to attend Wednesday’s semi-final match due to a scheduled visit with the French President.
“Should the German women’s national team reach the final, the Chancellor intends to be present” Kornelius stated. He emphasized that while the Chancellor would endeavor to facilitate the team’s progress, ultimately the result remains in their hands.
The spokesman added that a sense of enthusiasm and confidence has prevailed since Saturday regarding the team’s performance.
