Climate activist Luisa Neubauer has accused German Chancellor Friedrich Merz of breaking a promise made during the recent election campaign. In an interview with the “Tagesspiegel” Neubauer stated that Merz had publicly supported climate targets while campaigning, secured electoral success and subsequently included a renewed focus on gas exploration within the coalition agreement.
Neubauer expressed concern that the actions of the current government are hindering Germany’s ability to meet its climate goals. She suggested that Merz’s actions indicate a lack of serious commitment to climate protection measures.
Highlighting the undeniable global impact of climate change, Neubauer emphasized the urgent need for leadership and accountability. She criticized what she perceived as inaction from the Chancellor’s office, asserting that excuses for failing to address the climate crisis are no longer acceptable. Neubauer underscored the importance of treating political leaders with the expectation of responsible action and a commitment to tackling the challenges posed by climate change.
