German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) said he intends to push for a much faster pace of reforms across both the European Union and Germany.
During a government statement in the Bundestag on Wednesday-preceding the European Council meeting in Brussels that will take place tomorrow-Merz warned that a backlog of reforms is limiting the state’s flexibility and, more importantly, constraining people, businesses and workers. He urged that the country regain greater operational room.
Merz also pressed for concrete decisions at the upcoming EU summit. He noted that, in light of the current geopolitical situation and its effects on Europe, an ambitious European competitiveness agenda is imperative-and essential for the region’s strength. The first part of this agenda, he said, must be implemented within the current year.
Additionally, he cited the directive for the multi‑annual financial framework, which is expected to be adopted in Brussels by year‑end. “That is an expectation I bring with me to Brussels” Merz said.
