A spokesperson for Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has clarified that Merz does not plan any fundamental changes to Germany’s existing system of private and statutory health insurance, following his recent statements on the matter. The spokesperson told the Funke media group that the Chancellor had not questioned the entire health insurance system. Instead, Merz pointed to a growing sense of injustice among the population, which stems partly from differences in the medical services provided between citizens with statutory and private insurance. Merz made it clear that the federal government takes these concerns seriously, while also noting that there are “good reasons” supporting the current structure. At a press conference at the CDU party headquarters on Monday, Merz had stated that there are valid reasons for both systems. However, he continued, “If the population sees this as such a massive problem-and I share that assessment-then we have to change something. And that is exactly what we will be discussing.”
