German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, representing the CDU, highlighted the close cooperation between Germany and Lithuania, especially in the military sphere. Following a meeting with Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė, he emphasized that both nations are not only close friends and partners but also indispensable allies within the European Union. The conversation was framed by the ongoing security challenges created by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Merz reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, arguing that defending Ukraine is, in effect, defending the political order of Europe.
He stressed that any peace in Ukraine must be negotiated directly with the Ukrainian people and must rest on principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and international law. The discussion also covered security along the northern NATO eastern flank, where Merz reminded listeners that Lithuania’s security is inherently Germany’s as well. Germany acknowledges its responsibility in this context and is investing in European security by stationing a German Armed Forces brigade in Lithuania.
In closing, Merz spoke about the importance of European resilience in the global competition. He called for achieving “technological sovereignty” and strengthening the economic foundation of security. Germany and Lithuania have agreed on joint proposals to the European Commission aimed at boosting the competitiveness of European industry. Merz urged the EU to reduce bureaucracy significantly and to further strengthen the single market.
