Merz Kicks Off G7 Summit with Carney Amid Focus on AI and Global Economy

On the final day of the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) began the proceedings with a bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The two leaders met on Wednesday morning for a discussion scheduled to last about 20 minutes, prior to the official fourth working session.

The agenda for the subsequent working session, which includes the heads of partner nations, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, and the Secretary-General of the OECD, centers on reviving “balanced and sustainable” global economic growth.

In the lunchtime fifth session, the focus will shift to the topic of Artificial Intelligence. This discussion is expected to include the CEOs of several major tech companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic. Additionally, Merz has planned to hold personal meetings with several tech CEOs later in the day.
