Merz Praises China Cooperation, Urges Tackling Excess Capacity for Fair Competition

Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz (CDU) concluded his trip to China with a positive assessment.
“I left this country with strong impressions. We have a good partnership with China” he said on Thursday in the tech metropolis of Hangzhou.
He also acknowledged challenges that must be tackled together, especially in areas of competition. “China has large excess capacities, many of which now pose a problem for Europe because they go far beyond market demand” he explained. He added that this issue will require further intensive discussions after his visit.

Merz said he will urge the Federal Minister of Economics to arrange a follow‑up visit to China. In his view, the focus now is on pursuing a solid cooperation while openly addressing the tougher topics. “I dealt with those matters in my talks yesterday” the chancellor added.
