CDU leader Friedrich Merz has proposed Mathias Middelberg, the deputy of the Union Parliamentary Group, for the position of the party’s new Federal Treasurer. According to reports from the news magazine Politico, which cited sources within the party, Merz put forward this suggestion during an executive meeting held on Monday. The appointment officially still requires confirmation from the Federal Board, which is scheduled to convene again on September 7th. If confirmed, Middelberg would succeed Franziska Hoppermann, who held the treasurer role before Merz nominated her as the new CDU General Secretary.
