Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has expressed understanding for the resignation of Federal Labor Minister Bärbel Bas (SPD). Merz shared his thoughts on X, stating that he had worked with Bas in the federal government in good faith. He thanked her for her commitment, declaring that her decision deserves respect. The Chancellor added that as a father and grandfather, he could only imagine the weight of this loss, wishing her and her family strength.
Bas publicly announced her resignation from both her ministerial and party leadership roles that morning. While she cited personal reasons, she also named public criticisms coming from within the coalition partner as contributing factors. She stated that she currently lacks the energy to perform her government and party duties completely in the short term, leading her to decide to relinquish both positions.
Alexander Schweitzer has been mentioned as a potential successor at the ministry. However, this candidate faces resistance within the SPD. According to a statement released by Carmen Wegge and Ulrike Häfner, leaders of the SPD Women’s organization, newspapers reporting on the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” noted, SPD expects the ministry to be filled by a woman. “We strongly oppose filling the position with men,” the statement asserted. They emphasized that there are competent women who are knowledgeable about the current legislative processes and possess federal experience, making them well-suited to take over the ministry.
