German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has signaled a commitment to strengthening cooperation with Canada, particularly in light of transatlantic relations. Following a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the Chancellery on Tuesday morning, Merz announced intentions to expand collaboration within the defense industry, alongside efforts to bolster bilateral trade.
Focus will be placed on future technologies, including artificial intelligence, digitalization and robotics. The Chancellor also expressed support for Canada’s desire for closer ties with Europe, noting that groundwork had already been laid at the EU-Canada Summit in June, including the signing of a security and defense partnership. He highlighted the existing CETA free trade agreement as a valuable framework for commercial exchange.
Further strengthening economic links, the economics ministers of both nations are scheduled to sign a German-Canadian letter of intent on Tuesday, formalizing cooperation in the raw materials sector – a development welcomed by the Chancellor. This initiative is poised to build on existing engagement and facilitate a more comprehensive partnership between Germany and Canada.
