Following a meeting with the state premiers of eastern Germany, Chancellor Friedrich Merz has emphasized a commitment to intensified collaboration with the region’s leadership. Addressing a press conference at Ettersburg Castle on Thursday, Merz stated he accepted an invitation to the premiers’ conference and underscored the importance of close coordination moving forward.
The discussions revolved around addressing widespread anxieties and insecurity within the population, particularly in eastern Germany. Merz acknowledged a shared responsibility among political leaders to restore confidence, foster clear prospects for the future and reaffirm public trust in the nation’s direction.
While acknowledging progress already made, particularly referencing a comparison of average per capita incomes in eastern Germany (excluding Berlin) versus France, Merz emphasized that significant work remains. He specifically highlighted the need for improved nationwide rail and road networks, alongside a greater availability of major airport infrastructure, as crucial areas for continued development. The Chancellor reiterated a determination to work collaboratively to address these challenges and secure a positive trajectory for the region.
