Merz Warns SPD and Greens Against Berlin Left Coalition, Urges Defense of Democratic Norms

CDU leader Friedrich Merz criticized the proposed left-wing alliance in the capital during the Young Union’s “Deutschlandtag” event. Speaking on the second day of the annual youth meeting in Bonn, Merz warned that the country’s moral standards are beginning to slip. He stated that he cannot accept this trend and explicitly questioned the potential left-wing pact involving the SPD, the Greens, and Die Linke in Berlin.

Addressing the SPD and the Greens directly, Merz demanded to know whether they genuinely intended to proceed with coalition talks with such a party. He insisted that anyone who aims to strengthen the political middle and protect democracy in Germany must not engage in discussions or enter into a coalition with these radical left-wing groups, arguing that doing so is “not permissible for the protection of our democracy.” He strongly urged both parties to stop what they were doing in Berlin to instigate conflict and to halt this course of action.

Simultaneously, Merz reaffirmed his rejection of any cooperation with the AfD, warning his party members that they must oppose the party. He stated that the AfD seeks to change the republic toward the far right, a threat they must confront. Furthermore, he issued a severe warning to anyone within the CDU who believes that these individuals should be elected to state offices, declaring that such a person has no place in the CDU, Germany, or anywhere else.
