Merz’s Border Policy Under Fire

Green Party parliamentary group leader Katharina Dröge has sharply criticized Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) regarding his approach to border policy. In an interview with the “Spiegel” magazine, Dröge stated that Merz’s policies are detrimental to cooperation with Germany’s European neighbors. She indicated that the Polish government would not tolerate what she described as a “provocation” from Merz.

Dröge argued that while Merz frequently advocates for European unity, his actions are creating instability. She emphasized the severity of current international crises and asserted the need for a German Chancellor to actively foster EU cohesion rather than division. Dröge proposed that a viable solution lies in a unified European asylum policy, rather than individual national initiatives.

The Polish government announced the implementation of border controls on Tuesday, citing the new German government’s stricter border policies as a primary justification. This announcement follows increasing tensions between the two nations over migration and border management.
