After the death of the powerful drug lord known as “El Mencho” Mexico saw wide‑spread acts of violence. Security forces, during an operation in the western state of Jalisco, killed the CJNG leader-a move that sparked major road blockades from the cartel. Throughout almost a dozen Mexican states, vehicles were set ablaze on Sunday. In Jalisco’s capital, Guadalajara, streets turned deserted as residents fled for shelter.
El Mencho had been injured in a raid in the town of Tapalpa; he later died while being transported to Mexico City. Jalisco remains the cartel’s stronghold and the hub of its large‑scale fentanyl trafficking into the United States. U.S. officials say they supplied intelligence to Mexican authorities to support the operation.
