Mexico Routinely Downs Ecuador 2-0 in WC Round of 16

Mexico successfully navigated the Round of 16 of the World Cup with a commanding 2-0 victory against Ecuador. The “El Tri” squad secured the win before their home crowd in Mexico City, a match that had been delayed by an hour due to a thunderstorm, but the Mexican team maintained its strong performance throughout the encounter.

Under the direction of coach Javier Aguirre, Mexico dominated the game from the outset. The breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute when Julian Quinones netted a superb goal. He capitalized on a pass from Roberto Alvarado, finding his way into the lower-left corner from a half-left position. Just nine minutes later, on the 31st minute, Raul Jimenez doubled the lead. Jimenez capitalized on a two-pass move with Quinones, firing the ball from a central position into the upper-right corner.

While Ecuador ramped up the pressure during the second half, they were unable to penetrate the well-organized Mexican defense. Mexico, in turn, remained dangerous, and Raul Jimenez, along with Gilberto Mora, came agonizingly close to scoring a third goal. The final two minutes saw Ecuador reduced to ten men after Piero Hincapie received a red card, but no further goals were registered.

Mexico is scheduled to face the winner of the England versus DR Congo match this Monday at 2:00 AM (German time), with the match taking place again at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
