Minijobs Under Fire: Economist Calls for Restriction to Prevent Dependency and Secure Retirement

Monika Schnitzer, the chair of Wirtschaftsweisen, believes that there should be a clear restriction on minijobs. Telling the newspaper Bild that limiting these jobs to students, pensioners, and school attendees would be sensible, Schnitzer argues that secondary earners often utilize minijobs only to become trapped in part-time employment, thereby failing to accumulate sufficient retirement benefits. She warns that this practice is detrimental to the overall labor market and increases the risk that these secondary earners will not be adequately supported when they retire.

However, the Pension Commission has reportedly advocated for the complete abolition of minijobs, permitting them only for students. Opposing this proposal, some economists caution that such a drastic measure could lead to a rise in undeclared labor.
