Minister Bilger Pushes for Enhanced Drone Defense and Railway Improvements in Germany

Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger (CDU) intends to enhance the measures used to detect and defend against drones at Germany’s airports. Speaking to Politico, Bilger emphasized that timely detection is crucial, given that the German Air Traffic Control is responsible for safety in the airspace surrounding the airports. He called reliable detection an absolute necessity. While Frankfurt and Munich are already better equipped, Bilger stressed that there is no time to waste with the remaining airports, promising to accelerate further equipment upgrades.

Separately, Bilger expects noticeable improvements within the rail transport system. High expectations remain that the railway sector will see positive changes, particularly following his discussion with rail CEO Evelyn Palla. He believes progress is possible in areas spanning security, cleanliness, customer information, and, naturally, punctuality.
